“…This confirms and extends previous work that identified the presence of SAV RNA in heart and kidney tissue collected from flatfish in Scottish coastal waters, but which failed to isolate the virus (Snow et al 2010). Based on the presence of SAV in dab in a locality remote from salmonid aquaculture, we concluded that a reservoir of SAV in non-salmonid wild fish probably existed prior to the largescale development of salmonid aquaculture in Scotland (Nash 2011). This is supported by a study on the evolutionary rate of SAV that suggested the location of a wild reservoir would be in or around the North Sea (Karlsen et al 2014).…”

“…The time lag for domestication between agriculture and aquaculture is about 8 000 years (Liao and Huang 2000;Balon 2004;Nash 2011). The first evidence of some kind of control over the reproduction of captive Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, Cichlidae) in irrigation ponds comes from paintings and bas-reliefs found in Theban tombs in Egypt around 1500 years BC (Harache 2002;Nash 2011). The first known evidence of aquacultural practices took place in Asia before 1000 years BC due to the desires of an emperor to have a constant supply of his favourite fish (Liao 2000).…”

“…The first known evidence of aquacultural practices took place in Asia before 1000 years BC due to the desires of an emperor to have a constant supply of his favourite fish (Liao 2000). A treatise titled 'Fan Li on Pisciculture' is most likely the earliest work on fish farming in the world (Liao 2000;Nash 2011). For centuries, the people of the Indo-Pacific region have reared fish for consumption and today, Asia dominates aquaculture, accounting for about 90% of the world's production Gjedrem and Baranski 2009;Bostock et al 2010).…”
