The History and Future of Data Citation in Practice

Abstract: In this review, we adopt the definition that 'Data citation is a reference to data for the purpose of credit attribution and facilitation of access to the data' (TGDCSP 2013: CIDCR6). Furthermore, access should be enabled for both humans and machines (DCSG 2014). We use this to discuss how data citation has evolved over the last couple of decades and to highlight issues that need more research and attention. Data citation is not a new concept, but it has changed and evolved considerably since the beginning of … Show more

“…In contrast to the common peer-reviewed publication in journals, it is not so easy to measure the impact of research data per se, because data citation is still not a common practice [ 46 ], although it is becoming more and more important and accepted [ 47 ]. This is not only a cultural problem but also a technical challenge and therefore an issue of practicability [ 48 ]. One of the first metrics to count data citations was the commercial Data Citation Index.…”

“…The use of DOIs has become more popular as a PDI for data since DataCite acts as an organization of DOIs for datasets (Callaghan, 2014). However, there are several other choices of PIDs, such as Compact URIs (Parsons, Duerr, & Jones, 2019). The principle of Unique Identification also explains machine actionability that enables computers to search data.…”

“…Moreover, a standard for measuring and displaying data user metrics is worked on. In [25], Parsons et al review the history and future of data citations. "We know how to cite most data in research publications.…”
