The Histopathology of Malignant Lymphoma

Abstract: Summary. It has been possible to reinterpret non‐Hodgkin's lymphomas by applying subtle histological, cytological, and cytochemical techniques and electron microscopy as well as by using modern immunological methods and immune chemical analyses. This has led to the differentiation of four main groups of low‐grade and three main groups of high‐grade malignant lymphomas. Most non‐Hodgkin's lymphomas are derived from the B‐lymphocyte system. Only some of the lymphocytic, a small fraction of the lymphoblastic, and… Show more

“…As for subtypes, the distribution of lowgrade NHL was similar to that of other series, the most common types being the lymphoplasmocytoid and the diffuse centroblastic-centrocytic forms (Lennert et al, 1975;Aozasa et al, 1988). For high-grade NHL, the centroblastic type was twice as common as the immunoblastic type, whereas they are usually equally represented in extranodal or digestive NHL series (Dragosics et al, 1985;Carli et al, 1986).…”

“…This view was substantiated by the detection of dendritic reticulum cells in follicular lymphoma (Lennert and Niedorf, 1969;Levine and Dorfman, 1975 (Gerard-Marchant et al, 1974;Lennert et al, 1975 37W, then washed at 22°C with GVB (Veronal-buffered saline containing 0 1% bovine ser-:n albumin, 1-8 X10-4 M calcium, and 5X 10-4M magnesium). EAC1 was then incubated with C4 in amounts insufficient for the EAC14 to become immune-adherence-positive.…”

“…In 95% of the cases, the tumour shows a follicular growth pattern and has thus been called "follicular lymphoma". Recently, the term "malignant lymphoma (ML) centroblastic/ centrocytic" was introduced (GerardMarchant et al, 1974;Lennert et al, 1975a) because the cytological composition of the lymphoma is more consistent than the follicular growth pattern (which was absent in about 5% of our cases). Doubts about the close relationship between this tumour and germinal centres were eliminated by the demonstration of complement receptors on the neoplastic follicles, with a distribution and density similar to that of the complement receptors on reactive germinal centres (Jaffe et al, 1974;Stein, 1976).…”
