The Histone Methyltransferase SDG724 Mediates H3K36me2/3 Deposition at MADS50 and RFT1 and Promotes Flowering in Rice

Abstract: Chromatin modifications affect flowering time in the long-day plant Arabidopsis thaliana, but the role of histone methylation in flowering time regulation of rice (Oryza sativa), a short-day plant, remains to be elucidated. We identified a late-flowering long vegetative phase1 (lvp1) mutant in rice and used map-based cloning to reveal that lvp1 affects the SET domain group protein 724 (SDG724). SDG724 functions as a histone methyltransferase in vitro and contributes to a major fraction of global histone H3 lys… Show more

“…Members of this subgroup contain three conserved domains: an Associated with SET (AWS) domain, an SET domain, and a post-SET domain (26,27). A recent study proposed that rice SDG724 is a histone methyltransferase, because loss of SDG724 resulted in a decrease of global H3K36 methylation, and an in vitro assay revealed histone methyltransferase activity (28).…”

“…SDG701, related to Arabidopsis SDG2/ATRX3, regulates the tri‐methylation of H3K4 at Hd3a and RFT1 (Liu et al ., 2017). SDG724 , SDG725 and SDG708 encode proteins belong to SET domain family II; members of this family function in H3K36me2/3 modifications (Sun et al ., 2012; Sui et al ., 2013; Choi et al ., 2014; Liu et al ., 2016). Loss of function of any of these proteins results in late flowering in both LD and SD conditions.…”

“…S6). We selected histone marks that are usually located within genes and that were previously analyzed for florigen genes of other plant species (Jiang et al, 2008;Adrian et al, 2010;He, 2012;Sun et al, 2012;Gu et al, 2013;Mascheretti et al, 2013;LĂłpez-GonzĂĄlez et al, 2014). Four histone marks usually associated with active transcription were selected for chromatin analysis.…”
