The Higher Frequency of Blood Group B in a Brazilian Population with HIV Infection

Abstract: Objective:To analyze the frequency of and odds for and against HIV infection based on ABO blood type in a large sample of blood donors. Background:Coevolution between pathogens and hosts may explain the ABO system of polymorphisms. HIV-infected cells add ABO(H) blood group antigens to the viral envelope. Naturally occurring antibodies against ABO(H) antigens that are present in normal human sera are able to neutralize ABO-expressing HIV in vitro. Blood donors are ideal for studying blood groups and HIV infectio… Show more

“…Thus, Zuckerman and McDonald [ 19 ] found an excess of group A and a corresponding deficit of group O in 378 cases of acute hepatitis during a probable outbreak of hepatitis B in the British Air Force. Moreover, a study conducted in 2013 on Brazilians infected with HIV [ 11 ] revealed that the highest proportion of people infected with HIV has been observed in those of blood group B. The lowest proportion was observed in groups A and O.…”

“…Blood donors are ideal for this purpose, as all donors are routinely subjected to ABO blood group antigen and antibody typing and laboratory tests to detect these two infections [ 11 ].…”

“…These results suggest that ABO incompatibility at the time of primary virus exposure may offer some protection. Finally, a retrospective 16-year study of 271,000 Brazilian blood donors reported a slightly higher incidence of HIV among group B donors (286). Among the 389 HIV ϩ donors (0.01%) found upon screening, 14% were group B individuals, a rate which was slightly higher than that in the general population (9%; OR, 1.5 [95% CI, 1.13 to 2]).…”

“…Abdulazeez et al [29] on the other hand, had reported that blood group AB individuals were more prone to HIV-1 than HIV-2 while HIV-1 prevalence was significantly higher among rhesus D positive subjects than their rhesus D negative counterparts. Another contradictory result was from Onsten et al [30] who reported a higher frequency of HIV infection in blood group B compared to non-B donors. On the other hand, Mohammadali and Pourfathollah [31] reported a significant association between HIV infection and blood group A.…”
