The high-intensity reflectometer of the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science: MARIA

Abstract: MARIA is a world class vertical sample reflectometer dedicated to the investigation of thin films in the fields of magnetism, soft matter and biology. With the elliptical vertically focusing guide and a wavelength resolution of Δλ/λ = 10%, the non-polarized flux at the sample position amounts to 1.2 × 108 n (s cm2)−1. Besides the polarized and non-polarized reflectivity mode for specular and off-specular reflectivity measurements, MARIA can also be used to carry out grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scatte… Show more

“…In the resistivity measurement the magnetic field was applied along the sample surface direction and perpendicular to the current direction. The PNR measurements were carried out at the polarized magnetic reflectometer MARIA at the Heinz Maier‐Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany . Both the R + + and R − − reflectivity were measured at 0.3 T higher than the saturation field, along the in‐plane easy axis [010] direction.…”

“…If there is magnetic neutron scattering, then BornAgain can be used to simulate all the functionality of a polarizing reflectometer, like MARIA at MLZ Garching (Mattauch et al, 2018). This is all one needs for X-rays and for nuclear scattering of neutrons.…”

“…Again, we see very little changes, but due to improved statistics the decay at shear rated above 100s -1 is clearly significant. From pure rheological measurements [9], we know that beyond shear rates of 2000 to 3000s -1 the strong field induces larger domain interfaces. This means that then the equilibrium interface with each surfactant molecule having a typical head group area a [11] is violated and enlarged by the shear field.…”
