The Hidden Brain: Uncovering Previously Overlooked Brain Regions by Employing Novel Preclinical Unbiased Network Approaches

Abstract: A large focus of modern neuroscience has revolved around preselected brain regions of interest based on prior studies. While there are reasons to focus on brain regions implicated in prior work, the result has been a biased assessment of brain function. Thus, many brain regions that may prove crucial in a wide range of neurobiological problems, including neurodegenerative diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders, have been neglected. Advances in neuroimaging and computational neuroscience have made it possible … Show more

“…We used graph theory metrics to characterize the topological properties of FOS correlation networks following acute and chronic opioid exposure in AA and GG mice ( Simpson et al, 2021 ). We first explored whether opioid dependence affects the small-world properties of our FOS correlation networks.…”

“…[334][335][336][337] Data provided by these two imaging modalities have very different time courses, which must be taken into account when analytical approaches like ICA network analysis, originally adapted for fMRI, is applied to MEMRI. Other promising frameworks for studying networks revealed by MEMRI come from whole-brain imaging of immediate early gene expression 338,339 or structural covariance networks. [340][341][342] Further adaptation of these analytical strategies for longitudinal MEMRI data could lead to the illumination of large-scale brain network dynamics before, during, and after stimuli, under conditions not ethical in human studies.…”

“…These sites provide researchers a platform to collaborate, contribute their own data, or to analyze data from other groups ( Table 3 ). Furthermore, another area the AD imaging field can improve upon is in the analysis of subjective regions of interest ( Simpson et al, 2021 ). Manual stereology or delineation is based on the user’s experience and anatomical knowledge.…”
