The Hexamethonium-Silver Iodide Reversible Cell

Abstract: The hexamethonium-silver iodide solid-state cell has a highly competitive cost, as compared with those having the RbAg415 as electrolyte. In addition, it seems to possess the characteristic of reversibility and a much less polarizations phenomena at the positive electrode. The results obtained on the cell confirm the property of the hexamethonium-silver iodide as a solid electrolyte.

“…Hexamethonium iodide (HeXI 2 ) with a molecular formula (CH 3 ) 3 N -(CH 2 ) 6 -N(CH 3 ) 3 I 2 was used in Ag/I 2 cells along with silver iodide solid electrolyte, thus resulting in (HexAg )2 I ]4 ) electrolyte, which has a comparable Ag ionic conductivity to MAg 4 I 5 compounds. 56,57 The contact polarization in Ag/HexAg I2 I M /I 2 ,C was reduced by adding Hexl 2 and electrolyte to the cathode and the electrolyte to the anode. Here, Hexl 2 forms addition compounds with I 2 , when the cell was not operative and prevents free iodine reactions In a typical cell reaction, the Hexl 2 electrolyte retains iodine during charge and releases during discharge.…”
