The helminth fauna of the red-crested cardinal (Paroaria coronata) Passeriformes: Emberizidae in Brazil

Abstract: With the objective of identifying the helminths of Paroaria coronata, 40 birds were necropsied, and their organs and contents were examined. The parasites were preserved in 70 masculineGL alcohol and prepared for identification using standard techniques. The helminth fauna found in P. coronata were Aproctella carinii, Dispharynx nasuta, Capillaria sp., Diplotriaena sp., Tanaisia oviaspera, Tanaisia valida, Tanaisia sp., Prosthogonimus ovatus, Orthoskrjabinia sp., and Mediorhynchus sp., with Nematoda being most… Show more

“…The life cycle of Baruscapillaria obsignata (Madsen, 1945) is well-known (ANDERSON, 2000) (Table 4). Aproctella carinii and T. valida were reported in Passeriformes from same region with indexes of infection differing in our research (MASCARENHAS et al, 2009;BERNARDON et al, 2016) In Argentina, in hosts Threskiornithidae, A. heterolechithodes was reported in T. caudatus (n = 1) with MII=15 (LUNASCHI et al, 2015), and in P. chihi (n= 60) with P= 8.8% and MII=8.2 (DIGIANI, 2000). In our research the indexes were similar ( Table 2).…”

“…Kohn & Fernandes (1972) In Rio Grande do Sul, Monteiro et al (2007) identified P. ovatus in waterbirds, Dendrocygna bicolor (Vieillot, 1816) (n = 33), P = 3.0% and MI = 1; and Netta peposaca (Vieillot, 1816) (n = 20), P = 15.0% and MI = 4.3 (Anseriformes: Anatidae); and in Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin, 1789) (n = 47), P = 2.1% and MI = 1 (Suliformes: Phalacrocoracidae). Mascarenhas et al (2009) identified it in Paroaria coronata (Miller, 1776) (n = 40), P = 7.5% and MI = 3 (Passeriformes: Thraupidae).…”

“…Tanaisia valida Freitas, 1951 was described in Himantopus melanurus Vieillot, 1817 (Charadriiformes: Recurvirostridae) in the state of Rio de Janeiro and, later on, was reported by Mascarenhas et al (2009), in Paroaria coronata (Miller, 1776 (Passeriformes: Thraupidae) (n = 40), with P = 2.5%, MA = 0.05 and MI = 2, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.…”

“…In Brazil, this species was found for the first time in Gallus gallus (Linnaeus, 1758) by Travassos (1920). Later, it was found in about 30 species of birds, and it is considered a species with wide morphological variety and low host specificity (Travassos et al, 1969;Kohn and Fernandes, 1972;Monteiro et al, 2007;Mascarenhas et al, 2009). Despite the diversity of vertebrate hosts already reported infected with P. ovatus, this species has not been yet found in B. striata.…”
