The Harvest and Clinical Application of the Superficial Peroneal Sensory Nerve for Grafting Motor and Sensory Nerve Defects

Abstract: Potential donor nerves for autografting are finite and usually limited to cutaneous nerves of the extremities. The superficial peroneal nerve is the major lateral branch of the common peroneal nerve that innervates the peroneus longus and brevis muscles and provides sensation to the lateral aspect of the lower leg and the dorsal foot. It has generally been overlooked as a potential donor of nerve autografts. Cadaver dissections were performed on 10 fresh lower extremity specimens to investigate the anatomic ch… Show more

“…Moreover, SFN is suggested as an important and appropriate graft, particularly when multiple and long nerve grafts are needed (Buntic et al, 2002). Also, direct biopsy from the SFN is used in the diagnosis of its diseases (Vallat et al, 1987).…”

“…10,[25][26][27] The microsurgeon who performs reconstructive procedures either to the lower extremity itself or who harvests soft tissue and/or bone from the lower extremity must be aware of this anatomical variability. 28 We report here a variation of the SPN where the nerve is located within its own fascial tunnel in the septum separating the anterior from the lateral compartment.…”

“…[8][9][10] Superficial peroneal nerve is suggested as an important and appropriate graft, particularly when multiple and long nerve grafts are needed. 11 Also, direct biopsy from the superficial peroneal nerve is used in the diagnosis of its diseases. 12 Furthermore, this nerve is under the risk of injury, during correction deformity surgery in childhood and adolescence.…”
