The harmonization process to set up and maintain an operational biological and physical retrospective dosimetry network: QA QM applied to the RENEB network

Abstract: Purpose: The European Network of Biological and Physical Retrospective Dosimetry 'RENEB' has contributed to European radiation emergency preparedness. To give homogeneous dose estimation results, RENEB partners must harmonize their processes. Materials and methods: A first inter-comparison focused on biological and physical dosimetry was used to detect the outliers in terms of dose estimation. Subsequently, trainings were organized to improve both tools dose estimation. A second inter-comparison was performed … Show more

“…To achieve a more uniform MN analysis, an online MN training survey, focusing on both semi-automated/ automated (Metafer4, DAPI-stained cells) and manual (Giemsa-stained sells) MN scoring, was developed by the coordinating laboratory and made available on the RENEB website. To further harmonize the practices of the different labs in the RENEB network and minimize the discrepancies in the calculated doses a quality manual (QA & QM manual), based on ISO standards (Voisin et al 2002), was produced within the RENEB project for the various biological and physical dosimetry techniques used in the network (Gr egoire et al 2016). Performance of the CBMN assay according to QA and QM procedures should guarantee more accurate and comparable dose estimates among the network partners irrespective of the labs' specific MN protocol.…”

“…As such, new developments within this field which could be exploited for biodosimetry are a constant occurrence. One of the key outputs of RENEB was a quality manual which outlines a framework for quality assurance and quality management within the operational network (Gregoire et al 2016). When a new dosimetry technique is proposed, it is necessary to develop, test and then validate the method before it can be said to reach a sufficient standard for inclusion as a fully operational dosimetry method.…”

“…In order to ensure the accuracy and quality of the results of individual laboratories and the comparability of results between laboratories it is very important to establish a common methodology. This would need to encompass robust quality assurance and quality management procedures, as well as established, validated and documented protocols (Gregoire et al 2016). These procedures and protocols are essential in order to have good laboratory practice throughout the biological and physical dose assessment process (Voisin 2015).…”

“…After the training courses performed in other RENEB laboratories the response capability has been improved (Gregoire et al 2016, Wojcik et al 2016. Moreover, it is important to mention that the capacity of the assays increased drastically with the network and that these assays can be used, e.g.…”
