“…In particular, the Halifax County complex, described in detail by Kite (1982) and Kite and Stoddard (1984), and interpreted as ophiolitic, is locally overlain by Coastal Plain deposits. Kite and Stoddard (1984) also proposed that an extensive ophiolitic belt might occur beneath the Coastal Plain (also see Lawrence and Hoffman 1993).…”

“…Some of the ultramafic rocks of the southern Appalachians, with or without associated comagmatic mafic rocks, have been interpreted to have ophiolitic affinities (for example, Swanson and Raymond, 1977;Higgins and others, 1980;Drake and Morgan, 1981;Hatcher and others, 1984;Kite and Stoddard, 1984;McSween and Hatcher, 1985). Of these, only the Soapstone Ridge complex (Higgins and others, 1980), Piney Branch Complex (Drake and Morgan, 1981), and Halifax County complex (Kite and Stoddard, 1984) crop out within the Piedmont province.…”

“…The Fountain pluton is puzzling because it has a silicic peralkalic composition suggestive of rift-related magmatism (Mauger and others, 1983). EVIDENCE FOR TERRANE IDENTITY AND TIME OF AMALGAMATION-If the Halifax County complex on the western flank of this terrane is an island-arc ophiolite, as proposed by Kite and Stoddard (1984), it is likely that this terrane originated at least partly in an oceanic setting.…”

“…These could all be fault blocks of a single suspect terrane, but because of a lack of information about the stratigraphy and geologic history, Horton and others (1989a) tentatively consider the Roanoke Rapids as a separate terrane. REFERENCES-Farrar (1985a; ; Horton and others (1989a); Kite and Stoddard (1984); others (1983, 1987); Russell and others (1985) NA37d: CHARLESTON TERRANE The Charleston terrane of Horton and others (1989a) is equivalent to the "Charleston magnetic terrane" of Higgins and Zietz (1983) and the "Brunswick terrane" of Hatcher (1982, 1983) except for some boundary differences. The Charleston terrane is partly covered by overlapping Mesozoic strata of the South Georgia basin and is completely covered by Coastal Plain sediments.…”
