The hagfish heart

Abstract: The hypothalamic-pituitary system is considered to be a seminal event that emerged prior to or during the differentiation of the ancestral agnathans (jawless vertebrates). Hagfishes as one of the only two extant members of the class of agnathans are considered the most primitive vertebrates known, living or extinct. Accordingly, studies on their reproduction are important for understanding the evolution and phylogenetic aspects of the vertebrate reproductive endocrine system. In gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates… Show more

“…The remarkable design of this discrete brain region has been overlooked, with tanycytes being a key component of this design. Sower 37 to suggest that the hagfish may have both a diffusional model of regulation of the pituitary and a "pre-median eminence" endowed with a modest portal circulation. This ancestral median eminence consists of neurosecretory axons and ependymal cells with a long process (ancestors of tanycytes?)…”

“…90 In these species, the only cell types present in both neural lobe and median eminence are tanycytes whose processes traverse the whole gland to form a cuff on the blood capillaries (see section 5). The fine structure of these primitive tanycytes (including their content of lipid droplets), [36][37][38][39][40]90 and their response to certain experimental conditions, 38 suggest that they are a common ancestor of β-tanycytes and pituicytes.…”

“…In vertebrates, a symphony of physiological events is required to regulate sexual behavior and reproduction, and these mechanisms are driven by an interconnected biological system made up of the hypothalamus in the brain, the pituitary gland, and the gonads (testes/ovaries) [7,[35][36][37]. This hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis can be disrupted in multiple, complex ways [7,[38][39][40].…”
