Brno, 53, 1984: 143-150.The dynamics of some hematological and biochemical indices was studied in 45 rams reared in a central stock rearing house in the breeding season of 1982/1983. The results showed that the observed biochemical and hematological values correspond with the physiological standard. With advancing age a decrease was observed of the total count of erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, inorganic phosphorus and glucose. The nutritional level affected the content of urea and phosphorus in the blood plasma. A negative, highly significant correlation was proved between the age and the glucose level, and a positive, highly significant relationship between the total protein content and amount of wool in the grease and technically clean wool.The data obtained in this study may be employed for evaluation of the health ~tatus and nutrition of rams during rearing. The data may also serve as reference values for Merino ram-Iambs in the respective age categories. Rams, blood picture, nutrition, age, blood plasma, biochemistry.The presumption for a full development of genetic potential of all the productive characters of sheep are suitable environmental conditions during rearing. In order to evaluate their effect upon the developing organisms, however, it is necessary to know as many indices as possible, as they reflect these effects and, signalize the level of nutrient supply, mineral substances, vitamins; at the same time, they manifest the functional condition of the animal. From this aspect most important is knowledge about the basic hematological and biochemical blood indices which holds good especially in the young, developing animals. The importance of these laboratory analyses increases with the loading ofthe organism, may it be the effect of inconventional technology, degree of exploitation, method of nutrition, use of new genotypes, or when evaluating various experimental measures. Many studies have been written dealing with hematological values and metabolic profile of sheep blood (Soliman et al. 1975;Thomas and Axford 1968; Holub et aI. 1969; Sova and Medficky 1972;Hofirek 1978; Jelinek et aI. 1982 Jelinek et aI. , 1983Vrzgula et al. 1965 Vrzgula et al. , 1973Vrzgula et al. , 1982 Underwood 1971;Hennig 1972; BoISedanov 1973;Ried et al. 1974;Vrzgula and Skalka 1977; Jagos et. aI. 1980a). Only few studies were aimed at determination of the basic hematological and biochemical data with respect to age, sex, season, breed, etc.Therefore in the present study the basic hematological parameters and indices of the metabolic profile of blood plasma in Merino rams were studied. Suitability of these indices for evaluation of their nutritional status and metabolic disorders was verified as well.

Summary Blood characteristics of 50 male and 50 female adult donkeys were examined, as were differences between males and females. Female animals showed higher mean values for total erythrocytes, sedimentation rate, eosinophil, neutrophil and basophil counts, and for lymphocyte, neutrophil, eosinophil and basophil diameters, prothrombin time, serum Ca, glucose, Na and K. Male animals showed higher mean values for Hb concentration, PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC, erythrocyte and monocyte diameters, total number of leucocyte and platelet, lymphocyte and monocyte counts and serum cholesterol and inorganic phosphate. The differences were significant for Hb, erythrocyte diameter and serum Ca at the 1% level, MCV and serum K at 5% MCH and lymphocyte diameter at 2% and for neutrophil and eosinophil diameters at 0.1% level. Zusammenfassung Das Blutbild des adulten Esels Von je 50 männlichen und weiblichen Eseln wurden die Blutbilder unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Geschlechtsunterschiede untersucht. Folgende Parameter waren bei den weiblichen Tieren höher: Erythrozytenzahl, Erythrozytensenkungsgeschwindigkeit, Zahl der Eosinophilen, Neutrophilen und Basophilen pro μl, Durchmesser der Lymphozyten, Neutrophilen, Eosinophilen und Basophilen, Prothrombinzeit, Serumkonzentration von Glucose, Ca, Na und K. Folgende Parameter waren bei den männlichen Tieren höher: Hb‐Gehalt, PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC, Durchmesser der Erythrozyten und Monozyten, Zahl der Leukozyten, Thrombozyten, Lymphozyten und Monozyten pro μl, Serumkonzentration von Cholesterol und anorganischem Phosphat. The main aim of the present study was to determine the values of the haematological parameters of dairy sheep reared under intensive and semi-intensive conditions, as well as to test for the effects of age and reproductive stage of the animals on the values of these parameters. In total, 200 clinically healthy Chios sheep from 10 farms of Central Macedonia were used in the study. For the determination of the effect of age 150 sheep were assigned in three groups. Group A consisted of 50 lambs aged 3-6 months (meantSD: 4.45±1.22 months), group Β of 50 non-pregnant ewes into lactation aged 1-3 years (meantSD: 2.18±0.74 years) and group C of 50 non-pregnant ewes into lactation aged more than 3 years (meantSD: 5.88±1.87 years). For evaluating the effect of reproductive status 50 pregnant ewes in dry period were used, 15-30 days before the expected day of lambing (group D), along with the 100 non-pregnant ewes into lactation of groups Β and C (group E). Blood sampling was performed once, in dry ewes from December to January, and in lambs and lactating ewes from March to May. The mean values of the determined haematological parameters were within the range provided by the literature, except for red blood cells count of ewes. The results also showed that haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration and red blood cells, white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils and platelets count were significantly affected by the age; only monocytes and eosinophils count by the reproductive stage of the animals.
