Resonance production and decay in proton-proton collisions at kinetic beam energies of 1.25 GeV and 3.5 GeV as well as π − − p reactions at four different pion beam momenta (0.656, 0.69, 0.748 and 0.8 GeV/c) are investigated. Exclusive channels with one pion in the final state (npπ + and ppπ 0 ) in the pp collisions were put to extended studies based on various observables in the framework of a onepion exchange model and with solutions obtained within the framework of a partial wave analysis (PWA) of the Bonn-Gatchina group. In the case of the 3.5 GeV data, the study of the ppe + e − channel gave insight on the dielectron production from N * and ∆ in the second and third resonance regions. We show that the measured dielectron invariant mass distribution cannot be explained by a pointlike resonance-γ * coupling. Comparison with various transport models unravels the ambiguities of the descriptions and the important role of the intermediate ρ production. To tackle this problem a systematic investigation focused on the role of N(1520) production and decay in pion induced reactions on polyethylene and carbon targets. First results on exclusive channels with one pion (π − p), two pions (nπ + π − ) and dileptons (ne + e − ) in the final state are presented.

Particle IDentification (PID) is fundamental to particle physics experiments. This paper reviews PID strategies and methods used by the large LHC experiments, which provide outstanding examples of the state-of-the-art. The first part focuses on the general design of these experiments with respect to PID and the technologies used. Three PID techniques are discussed in more detail: ionization measurements, time-of-flight measurements and Cherenkov imaging. Four examples of the implementation of these techniques at the LHC are given, together with selections of relevant examples from other experiments and short overviews on new developments. Finally, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS 02) experiment is briefly described as an impressive example of a space-based experiment using a number of familiar PID techniques.Comment: 61 pages, 30 figure

The paper reviews recent progress in particle identification methods. We first survey the present experience in Cherenkov counters employed for particle identification in various experimental environments. Then we discuss upgrades of existing devices and novel detector concepts, as well as recent progress in photon detectors. We also evaluate the possibility of a precision measurement of the time of arrival of Cherenkov photons, either in combination with a ring imaging counter or in a dedicated time-of-flight detector. We further discuss identification with a time-offlight measurement over very large areas by means of gas chambers, and the application of the measurement of energy loss in large volume TPC trackers. Finally, we discuss electron identification in transition radiation detectors and identification of muons in muon detector systems.
