The continued public presence of far-right groups, particularly alt-right gangs (e.g., Proud Boys) participating in mass demonstrations and protests across the United States has made it clear that these groups and their behavior remain a concern. The overall lack of knowledge among policy makers, law enforcement, and community residents on how to deal with alt-right gang members has limited their ability to intervene and prevent violence. The misconception that alt-right gangs are domestic terrorist organizations, primarily driven by racist ideology, ignores just how unrefined and rudimentary the beliefs that connect members together actually are. The reliance on ideology has limited the inclusion of alt-right gangs in conventional gang studies and has directly impacted gang scholars' ability to understand group dynamics among these far-right gangs. This has in turned skewed also how law enforcement is trained to identify and deal with alt-right gangs. This manuscript overviews the need to rectify the historical apathy of traditional gang scholars and law enforcement in dealing with far-right/alt-right gangs.We conclude with a discussion on how the mainstreaming of alt-right groups over the last few years has accelerated and the growing need to explicitly treat these groups as street gangs.

Deplatforming “the people”: media populism, racial capitalism, and the regulation of online reactionary networks

This essay contributes to a materialist theory of media populism by criticizing America First, an influential U.S. American reactionary live-stream hosted by Nicholas J. Fuentes, and its Groyper fans. Fuentes has expanded his online presence despite the deplatforming, or administrative suspension, of his social media accounts on account of his antisemitic, antiblack, and sexist hate speech. To understand the ideological ramifications of deplatforming populist influencers, I read clips from America First into the economic and infrastructural context of U.S. far-right subcultures. I argue that media studies must attend to bourgeois digital platform management as a technology which reproduces the undemocratic conditions of racial capitalism. The deplatforming of Fuentes facilitates the ascent of reactionary populism by reinforcing possessive individualism, or a white masculine fantasy of unmediated access to the public. “The people” of populism functions as media whose lost presence naturalizes sovereign violence against marginalized people. Media populism illustrates the need for to move beyond the dichotomy of “mainstream” versus “fringe” platforms to consider the material affinity of bourgeois digital publics and white nationalist provocation.

Este artículo aborda la compleja relación entre la Derecha Alternativa y el neoliberalismo desde una perspectiva teórica y analítica. El estado de la cuestión ha caracterizado a la Derecha Alternativa como un nuevo espacio político, de características ultraconservadoras, cuyo propósito es convertirse como hegemón cultural en internet. Como ya han señalado otros académicos, se construye, como su nombre indica, contra la derecha hegemónica por su complacencia a la izquierda posmarxista y al neoliberalismo contemporáneo. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es dilucidar cuáles son las características y fundamentos que hacen romper a la Derecha Alternativa con la lógica neoliberal, para posteriormente entender su retórica y sus pretensiones. En suma, debido al entendimiento del organicismo y autoconservación de la Derecha Alternativa, sostiene que, el neoliberalismo abocará a la destrucción de las naciones en favor de una economía global. Las herramientas de politización con las que cuentan no es más que su método para señalar a una ideología y prácticas hegemónicas —neoliberales— y las consecuencias de la globalización: más poder para organismos supraestatales, transnacionales y filántropos con intereses inquietantes y una nación desamparada al nuevo orden mundial.Recibido: 11 febrero, 2023; Versión final: 16 mayo, 2023
