“…Importantly, both methods have shown similar AE angle values. 7,8,19 The inclination of the AE is therefore defined as the angle formed by one of the lines that passes through the AE and the Frankfort horizontal plane or any other horizontal plane, such as the occlusal plane or palatal plane 9 . The horizontal plane used as the reference in this study was the palatal plane (formed between the anterior nasal spine and posterior nasal spine), since it is easy to define in multiplanar reconstruction in the axial and sagittal slices of the software used.…”

“…6,7,8 The AE inclination constitutes an important element in the biomechanics of the TMJ, as well as the entire masticatory system, defined as the angle between the posterior wall of the AE and a horizontal reference plane. 4,9 This inclination can be measured in degrees, with normal values between 30º and 60º. 10 AEs below 30º are classified as flat and above 60º, as steep 9 , Declaration of Interests: The authors certify that they have no commercial or associative interest that represents a conflict of interest in connection with the manuscript.…”

“…Articular eminences having inclination values smaller than 30º have been characterized as flat, and those having values greater than 60º have been characterized as steep (Katsavrias, 2002).…”

“…Because, taking transcranial radiographs, patients are instructed to take a position with their Frankfort plane approximately parallel to the horizontal plane, the horizontal line in radiograph was used as a reference line in the measurement. In the result, the inclination of the articular eminence measured in terms of the method introduced by Katsavria et al 10) was steeper in open lock group than in TMD and normal group. This result implies that patients with steeper articular eminence are riskier to TMD open lock, and in concordance with the previous studies that poor development associated TMD open lock 7) and recurrent mandibular dislocation mainly occurred in patients with a steep articular eminence.…”
