Płynność finansowa zgodnie z teorią wpływa na rentowność przedsiębiorstw [Lazaridis, Tryfonidis, 2006] i może być w związku z tym uznana za jeden z czynników, który determinuje ten proces. Należy jednak zauważyć, że utrzymanie pewnego poziomu płynności wpływa na rentowność, natomiast rentowność nie prowadzi automatycznie do zapewnienia płynności [Bednarski, Waśniewski (red.), 1996, s. 13]. Rentowność jest jednocześnie głównym determinantem kreowania wartości, a jak twierdzi Damodaran [2007], wzrost należy łączyć przede wszystkim z wartością dodaną i rentownością. Skoro płynność wpływa na rentowność, a rentowność na wzrost przedsiębiorstw, można poszukiwać bezpośrednich związków między wzrostem jednostek gospodarczych a płynnością finansową.
