The GREGOR Fabry-Perot interferometer: a new instrument for high-resolution solar observations

Abstract: The GREGOR Fabry-Pérot Interferometer (GFPI) is one of the first-light instruments of the 1.5-meter GREGOR solar telescope currently being commissioned at Observatorio del Teide (OT), Tenerife, Spain. A spectral resolution of R ≈ 250, 000 over the wavelength range from 530-860 nm can be achieved using a tunable dual etalon system. A high spectral resolving power is needed to extract physical parameters (e.g., temperature, plasma velocity and the magnetic field vector) from inversions of photospheric and chromo… Show more

“…Examples of current filter type instruments are the Imaging Vector Magnetograph (IVM, Mickey et al 1996), the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS, Cavallini 2006), the Solar Vector Magnetograph (SVM, Gosain et al 2006), the CRisp Imaging SpectroPolarimeter (CRISP) at the SST (Scharmer et al 2008), and the GREGOR Fabry-Pérot Instrument (GFPI, Denker et al 2010). Tunable imaging spectrometers come in various flavors.…”

“…Imaging spectropolarimetry is nowadays carried out with complex Fabry-Perót interferometers (FPIs). Examples include the Triple Etalon SOlar Spectrometer (TESOS) [1,2] at the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT), the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectropolarimeter (IBIS) [3] at the Dunn Solar Telescope (DST), the CRisp Imaging SpectroPolarimeter (CRISP) [4] at the Swedish Tower Telescope (SST), and the GREGOR Fabry-Perót Interferometer (GFPI) [5,6] at the 1.5meter GREGOR solar telescope [7][8][9] located at Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife, Spain. The next generation of FPIs is already on the horizon.…”

“…16,17 In 2009, the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam took over the scientific responsibility for the GFPI, and the instrument was finally installed at the GREGOR telescope. 19 During the commissioning phase in 2011, the software was prepared for TCP/IP communication with external devices according to the Device Communication Protocol (DCP 20 ) and three computercontrolled translation stages (two filter sliders and one mirror stage) were integrated into the GFPI. 21 This permits automated observing and calibration procedures and facilitates easy operations during observing runs.…”
