The good, the bad, and the environment: developing an area-based measure of access to health-promoting and health-constraining environments in New Zealand

Abstract: Background Accounting for the co-occurrence of multiple environmental influences is a more accurate reflection of population exposure than considering isolated influences, aiding in understanding the complex interactions between environments, behaviour and health. This study examines how environmental ‘goods’ such as green spaces and environmental ‘bads’ such as alcohol outlets co-occur to develop a nationwide area-level healthy location index (HLI) for New Zealand. … Show more

“…For the majority of the population the living environment features significant barriers to a healthy lifestyle ( 2 , 4 6 ). These include the community, consumer, worksite/school and home food environments that discourage healthy dietary patterns, typically stocking a greater proportion of energy dense, nutrient poor foods ( 7 ). This has led to the loss of skills needed for simple, healthy home cooking ( 3 , 8 10 ).…”

“…We also report more unemployed/beneficiaries (33.4%) were BA + compared to those with a confirmed employment status (4.7–15.5%). Of note, greater accessibility to alcohol supply outlets is apparent in more deprived compared to less deprived New Zealand communities 22 . A well‐established association between alcohol consumption and abusive behaviour exists, 23 and while road transport crashes accounted for the largest proportion (45.2%), the odds of alcohol‐related trauma occurring by interpersonal violence was 4.48 times greater in our study.…”

“…accessibility and proximity), and possibly cooking capacity of healthy food. Further evidence of interrelated factors, such as attitudinal adjustment and resource redistribution, appears in a study from New Zealand showing that community gardens contribute to health as both a source of nutrition and wellbeing because they are also green space [76]. For communities in Southeast, Virginia experiencing limited access to healthy foods due flooding, gardens may have similar effects upon wellbeing and accessibility by increasing green space and improving drainage.…”
