The GN-Model of Fiber Non-Linear Propagation and its Applications

Abstract: Several approximate non-linear fiber propagation models have been proposed over the years. Recent reconsideration and extension of earlier modeling efforts has led to the formalization of the so-called Gaussian-Noise (GN) model. The evidence collected so far hints at the GN-model as being a relatively simple and, at the same time, sufficiently reliable tool for performance prediction of uncompensated coherent systems, characterized by a favorable accuracy vs. complexity trade-off.This paper tries to pull togeth… Show more

“…NRZ pulses were generated with ideal rectangular shape, while RZ 50% pulse shape corresponds to the one described in [14]. The bit sequences used are decorrelated pieces of a pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS, 2 23 − 1) with a fixed length of 2 19 bits per carrier. The symbol sequences of different carriers were decorrelated randomly by at least 173 symbols.…”

“…PLIs of EONs have been studied for the past several years. Estimation of the PLIs plays an important role in the network stage planning [13][14][15]. The most common model for estimating the PLIs is the transmission reach (TR) model [13], which approximates the maximum distance a signal can travel without regeneration.…”

“…When we apply the TR model in realistic scenarios of routing and spectrum allocation for EONs, it severely overestimates the PLIs. In order to obtain a more accurate estimate of channel PLIs, a state-dependent model, the Gaussian noise (GN) model [11,15], has been proposed.…”

“…Como apresentado anteriormente, em situações nas quais deseja-se avaliar o impacto da interferência não-linear oriunda de espectro com banda reduzida, e.g., da ordem de gigahertz, a hipótese de acúmulo coerente de interferência NL torna-se mais fidedigna com os resultados experimentais [31].…”
