The Katian Age (early Late Ordovician) was a time of signifi cant decline in marine biodiversity, but whether this decline was a real phenomenon or an artifact of the relatively few studies devoted to this interval requires further research. We examined the pattern of graptolite faunal changes across the boundary between the Climacograptus bicornis and Diplacanthograptus caudatus graptolite zones in North America and on several other continents. A sharp decline in species diversity occurs in the Appalachian Basin. Scores for normalized diversity dropped from 20 in the C. bicornis Zone to 7 in the D. caudatus Zone. Only 11% of the species present in the C. bicornis Zone carry over into the D. caudatus Zone. A similar pattern occurs in central Oklahoma. Regions at higher paleolatitude, such as Wales and Baltoscandia, exhibit low graptolite diversity in lower Katian strata, and then diversity declines further in higher strata. In other regions at low paleolatitude, such as Australasia and Scotland, however, diversity is fairly constant across this interval (although the percentage of carryover taxa remains low). We conclude that seawater temperature change or disruption of the oceanic density structure, which might accompany temperature change, provides explanations for the similarity between Laurentian and higher paleolatitude diversity patterns. Flooding of the Laurentian craton through the Sebree Trough by cool, subpolar Iapetus seawater may have adversely affected graptolite diversity there. Regions at high paleolatitudes likely underwent cooling associated with Katian climate deterioration. Thus seawater cooling, albeit driven by different mechanisms, may have produced similar diversity patterns at different paleolatitudes. †

The Glasford structure in Illinois (USA) was recognized as a buried impact crater in the early 1960s but has never been reassessed in light of recent advances in planetary science. Here, we document shatter cones and previously unknown quartz microdeformation features that support an impact origin for the Glasford structure. We identify the 4 km wide structure as a complex buried impact crater and describe syn‐ and postimpact deposits from its annular trough. We have informally designated these deposits as the Kingston Mines unit (KM). The fossils and sedimentology of the KM indicate a marine depositional setting. The various intervals within the KM constitute a succession of breccia, carbonate, sandstone, and shale similar to marine sedimentary successions preserved in other craters. Graptolite specimens retrieved from the KM place the time of deposition at approximately 455 ± 2 Ma (Late Ordovician, Sandbian). This age determination suggests a possible link between the Glasford impact and the Ordovician meteorite shower, an increase in the rate of terrestrial meteorite impacts attributed to the breakup of the L‐chondrite parent body in the main asteroid belt.

The Ordovician and Silurian of the Baoshan and Mangshi regions in western Yunnan Province, SW China, have long been regarded as being continuous and representative of the Sibumasu terrane. However, our recent biostratigraphical investigations of three Katian to Llandovery sections of predominantly clastic facies reveal a significant, largely correlative disconformity within the Upper Ordovician. These sections include the Laojianshan and Feida Storehouse sections in Baoshan, and the Shaodihe section in Mangshi. In the Baoshan region, the disconformity lies at the base of the overlying Jenhochiao Formation and spans a time interval from earliest late Katian (Dicellograptus complexus Biozone) to early Hirnantian (lower Metabolograptus extraordinarius Biozone), as constrained by the trilobites and brachiopods from the underlying strata and the graptolites from the overlying strata. In the Mangshi region, the disconformity lies at the base of the overlying Wanyaoshu Formation, spanning nearly the entire late Katian (Dicellograptus complexus Biozone to lower Paraorthograptus pacificus Biozone), as constrained by graptolites, trilobites and brachiopods from underlying and overlying beds. A considerably diverse, typical Hirnantia fauna occurs in the Wanyaoshu Formation, which is correlated with the same fauna from the Kuanyinchiao Formation in the Yangtze region, South China, and its equivalents elsewhere. A weathering crust of 10–20 cm in thickness occurs ubiquitously in both regions, in association with the disconformity. This stratigraphical gap within the Upper Ordovician in western Yunnan is probably resulted from the abrupt sea‐level drop induced by Late Ordovician Glaciations, or alternatively and less likely result from a regional tectonic uplift in northern Sibumasu terrane.
