The Global Standard Stratotype-section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Eocene Series in the Dababiya section (Egypt)

Abstract: The GSSP for the base of the Eocene Series is located at 1. 58 m above the base of Section DBH in the Dababiya Quarry, on the east bank of the Nile River, about 35 km south of Luxor, Egypt. It is the base of Bed 1 of the Dababyia Quarry Beds of the El Mahmiya Member of the Esna Formation, interpreted as having recorded the basal inflection of the carbon isotope excursion (CIE), a prominent (3 to 5%) geochemical signature which is recorded in marine (deep and shallow) and terrestrial settings around the world.… Show more

“…We apply the term Marlboro Clay to refer to the gray clay unit in the New Jersey sections. The Marlboro Clay is identified by a ∼4‰ decrease in δ 13 C that marked the CIE and Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) near the base [e.g., Cramer et al , 1999; Zachos et al , 2006; John et al , 2008], thus identifying it as a lower Eocene formation [ Aubry et al , 2000, 2007].…”

“…The GSSP of the Ypresian Stage was ratified in 2003 (Aubry et al . ) and is located at the base of ‘Bed 1 of of the Esna Formation’ at the Dababyia Quarry section, in coincidence with the onset of the negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE) marking the base of the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Recently, Khozyem et al .…”

“…It requires biostratigraphic study of the deeper, unexposed part and carbon isotopic analysis of the complete section in order to explore the possibility of obtaining the characteristic isotopic signatures of Palaeocene-Eocene boundary. The base of the Eocene is now defined at the onset of the Carbon Isotopic Excursion (CIE) in GSSP at Debabiya Quarry section of Egypt (Aubry et al 2007). It is also demonstrated that the Ilerdian Stage, marked by the first appearance of N. fraasi, is coeval with the onset of CIE and the Palaeocene -Eocene boundary (Pujalte et al 2009).…”
