“…The GSSP of the Piacenzian Stage was ratified in 1997 in the Punta Piccola section (Sicily, Italy) (Castradori et al . ) at the base of the beige marl bed of small‐scale carbonate cycle 77, in correspondence with the precessional cycle 347 (from the present) at 3.6 Ma (GTS12). The Gilbert/Gauss (C2Ar/C2An.3n) magnetic reversal is documented immediately above the GSSP (at 3.596 Ma; GTS12) and is considered the primary tool to denote the base of the Piacenzian.…”

“…This species temporarily disappears above the base of cycle 79, up to cycle 88, and is discontinuously present above. In cycle 79 the last occurrence (LO) of Globorotalia puncticulata is recorded, slightly above the GSSP of the Piacenzian that is defined at the Gilbert‐Gauss magnetic boundary in cycle 77 [ Castradori et al , 1998]. Therefore the three studied basal cycles belong to the M Pl 4a Subzone of Sprovieri [1993].…”

“…In particular, Hilgen [1991] and Lourens et al [1996] reported the sequence of lithological cycles throughout the Punta Piccola section, which covers the interval from the upper part of M Pl 4a to the middle part of the M Pl 5a biozones [ Sprovieri , 1993]. In lithologic cycle 77 at the base of the sampled section, Castradori et al [1998] defined the GSSP of the Piacenzian stage. Finally, the sapropel at the top of the section (lithologic cycle A5) can be correlated to the Nicola bed of the Monte San Nicola section, in which the GSSP of the Gelasian was defined [ Rio et al , 1998].…”

“…The Pliocene (5.3 to 2.6 million years ago (Ma)), specifically the mid-Piacenzian 1,2 (3.6 to 2.6 Ma), has been a focus of synoptic paleoclimate research for the past 25 years. The mid Piacenzian warm period (3.264 to 3.025 Ma) is the most recent time in Earth’s past that exhibited climates not unlike those projected for the end of the 21st century 3 .…”
