The Global Neurological Burden of Tuberculosis

Abstract: Central nervous system (CNS) involvement of tuberculosis (TB) is the most severe manifestation of TB and accounts for approximately 5 to 10% of all extrapulmonary TB (EPTB) cases and approximately 1% of all TB cases. TB meningitis (TBM) is the most common form of CNS TB, though other forms occur, often in conjunction with TBM, including intracranial tuberculomas, tuberculous brain abscesses, and spinal tubercular arachnoiditis. CNS TB often presents with nonspecific clinical features that mimic symptoms of oth… Show more

“…Spinal tuberculosis is one of the most common extrapulmonary tuberculosis, and approximately accounts for half of bone and joint tuberculosis, which is harmful to human body and may cause vertebral collapse, kyphosis deformity and paraplegia. In recent years, with the global resurgence of tuberculosis, the incidence of spinal tuberculosis in China has been increasing year by year [1, 2]. The incidence of mid-thoracic (T5–9) spinal tuberculosis is second to that of thoracolumbar and lumbar tuberculosis, and the most vulnerable populations include young people and middle-aged people.…”

“…Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a worldwide disease with a case fatality rate of 15-68% (Sheu et al, 2009;Christensen et al, 2011;Bahr et al, 2018;Thakur et al, 2018), and more than half of survivors are left with neurological sequelae (Hosoglu et al, 2002;Chiang et al, 2014;Thakur et al, 2018). The early diagnosis and treatment of tuberculous meningitis has long been recognized as the most important prognostic factor (Hosoglu et al, 2002;Katti, 2004;Bahr et al, 2018).…”

“…Tuberculosis of the central nervous system accounts for approximately 5-10% of extrapulmonary cases of TB [2]. Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most life-threatening form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and neuro-tuberculosis is the most common presentation [3].…”
