The Global Evidence Mapping Initiative: Scoping research in broad topic areas

Abstract: BackgroundEvidence mapping describes the quantity, design and characteristics of research in broad topic areas, in contrast to systematic reviews, which usually address narrowly-focused research questions. The breadth of evidence mapping helps to identify evidence gaps, and may guide future research efforts. The Global Evidence Mapping (GEM) Initiative was established in 2007 to create evidence maps providing an overview of existing research in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI).MethodsT… Show more

“…[42] and 'evidence maps' have been developed by The Global Evidence Mapping Initiative to create an overview of existing research in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) research e.g. [43]. Both of these types of evidence syntheses are similar in methodology to systematic map methods developed by SCIE.…”

“…CADIMA is also suitable for assisting in the process of conducting other forms of evidence synthesis, including systematic maps [8,9] and rapid reviews [26] since not all steps of a systematic review have to be completed within the program. Consequently, the data extraction sheet can be designed to house meta-data only, and the critical appraisal step can be skipped completely if deemed necessary by the review authors.…”

“…Health research prioritisation criteria include clinical importance, magnitude of the problem, likelihood of reducing burden, cost effectiveness, present knowledge, resources, ethical aspects, research capacity, novelty and controversy. 22,23 Barrable 1 outlined 'relevancy' criteria used by the Rick Hansen Institute to establish SCI research priorities that include selecting the highest quality trials based on available science, impact of outcomes on people with SCI, stakeholder engagement in design and implementation, probability of long-term uptake, economic sustainability and opportunities to leverage funding support from other organisations.…”
