The global burden of trichiasis in 2016

Abstract: BackgroundTrichiasis is present when one or more eyelashes touches the eye. Uncorrected, it can cause blindness. Accurate estimates of numbers affected, and their geographical distribution, help guide resource allocation.MethodsWe obtained district-level trichiasis prevalence estimates in adults for 44 endemic and previously-endemic countries. We used (1) the most recent data for a district, if more than one estimate was available; (2) age- and sex-standardized corrections of historic estimates, where raw data… Show more

“…Epidemiology papers covering a variety of anterior eye conditions have also been undertaken, covering corneal dystrophies/ulcers, keratoconus, uveitis and trichiasis. 28,92,93,95,96,101 A national trachoma programme has been implemented in Pakistan, adopting the WHO SAFE strategy to control the disease. The successful strengthening control of trachoma in Pakistan is reflected in a major achievement, namely the drastically reduced prevalence of trichiasis estimated by Flueckiger et al 96 Theme 3: Public views on eye related issues Patient priorities in terms of eye care are largely explored under themes 3 and 5.…”

“…. * ≥ 15 = TT prevalence was provided by the NTD control program Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly, and Children (MoHCDGEC) ( Table 3Table 3), and population estimates were calculated using methods described in detail elsewhere [16]. Briefly, district-level population was estimated from www.worldpop.org raster files [20] using the zonal statistics tool in ArcGIS 10.3 [21] and then multiplied by the population percent expected to be 15 years and older derived from the UN population division (UNdata) [22] rural population pyramids.…”
