At least one of the more "seasoned" co-authors on this commentary remembers all too well patiently having to wait through the electronically painful sounds of their 2,400 baud modem to slowly, but surely, connect its way to the internet. Fast forward almost three decades, and we find ourselves nearly continuously and efficiently connected online through smartphones, tablets, laptops, and computers. In fact, as of 2023, over 5.2 billion individuals worldwide are active smartphone users, with this projection increasing each year to an estimated 6.2 billion users by 2028 (Degenhard, 2022).
