The giant Lyα nebula associated with a z = 2.5 radio galaxy

Abstract: Abstract. We present a kinematic and morphological study of the giant Lyα nebula associated with the radio galaxy MRC 2104−242 (z = 2.49) based on integral field spectroscopic VIMOS data from VLT. The galaxy appears to be embedded in a giant ( > ∼ 120 kpc) gas reservoir that surrounds it completely. The kinematic properties of the nebula suggest that it is a rotating structure, which would imply a lower limit to the dynamical mass of ∼ 3 × 10 11 M . An alternate scenario is that the gas is infalling. Such a pr… Show more

“…However, higher σ v values have been reported for CEN around some RQQs and radio-loud sources (B16; Ginolfi et al 2018). For the latter, the high σ v is likely due to the jets mechanical interaction with the Lyα-CEN (van Ojik et al 1997;Villar-Martín et al 2006;Silva et al 2018).…”

“…The first circum-galactic medium (CGM) emission nebulae detected in Lyα (Lyα-CEN hereafter) were mostly observed around high redshift radio galaxies with sizes exceeding 100 kpc, through narrow-band (NB) imaging and slit spectroscopy (e.g. Heckman et al 1991;van Ojik et al 1997;Villar-Martín et al 2006, 2007aHumphrey et al 2007Humphrey et al , 2013. Only a minor fraction (∼10%) of them were reported around radio-quiet quasars (RQQs; e.g.…”

“…Narrow-band surveys for Lyman-α (Lyα) emitting galaxies at high redshift have recently revealed a number of luminous (up to 5 × 10 43 erg s −1 ), very extended (from a few times ten kpc to more than 150 kpc) Lyα-emitting objects, so-called Lyα "blobs" (Fynbo et al 1999;Keel et al 1999;Steidel et al 2000;Francis et al 2001;Matsuda et al 2004;Palunas et al 2004;Dey et al 2005;Villar-Martin et al 2005). At least three mechanisms have been suggested as energy sources for Lyα blobs.…”

“…Previous IFS studies of EELRs around RLQs have focused on optical emission lines from low redshift objects (e.g. Durret et al 1994;Crawford & Vanderriest 2000;Sánchez et al 2004;Christensen et al 2006), or the analysis of a single radio galaxy (Villar-Martín et al 2005). IFS is well suited for this purpose because of the possibility to create narrow-band images at any suitable wavelength with an adjustable band width, and to simultaneously investigate velocity profiles.…”
