The German Defence System of the Gr&amp;#232;ve de Goulven (Finist&amp;#232;re—FR) during the World War II

This article presents the history of the German H.K.A.A. (Heer Küste Artillerie Abteilung-Army Coastal Artillery Group) 1161 during the WWII in the Finistère (FR). The emplacements Stps Av 34 or Av 55, Av 64, Av 66a, Av 67 of its four companies 1./H.K.A.A. 1161, 2./H.K.A.A. 1161, 3./H.K.A.A. 1161 and 4./H.K.A.A. 1161 have been visited and the preservation state of the remaining components, at about 77 years from the end of the WWII, ascertained. The problem of inhomogeneities between the information from different historical sources has been addressed by not altering the information from a source also in case of partial agreement with information from other sources and to discuss the information from different sources in case of relevant discrepancies in order to obtain the correct information. The preservation of the emplacements in the future is not assured, in fact, no classification as monuments or architectural heritage is foreseen and they are menaced by the expansion of the urbanization of the nearby cities.

The segments of the Atlantic Wall in different countries have been the subject of many publications of various authors. Examples of remains of Atlantic Wall segments, at about seventy years from the WWII end, in the Finistère (FR) at the Keremma dunes, Audierne Bay, Goulven Bay, Aber Wrach, Camaret sur Mer, Cleus Foz, Saint-Pabu and other places have already been proposed to the attention of the readers. The Stp Kermorvan, subject of this article, represents a further interesting example of them, which in addition illustrates its interactions with very ancient structures and pre-existing defensive structures. It did not use said ancient structures, but destroyed some of them for its defense exigencies, and did not adapt existing defensive structures to its new defense requirements but re-use them mainly for logistics and personnel lodgment.

In a previous article (Tomezzoli, 2016), the issue of the German radar surveillance around the Aber Wrach in Brittany has been identified. Purpose of this article is to provide replies to said issue presenting the radar bases of Keringar Vihan, Kervingam-Kerdené and Vougo-Kerizoc. If the visits on the sites permitted to determine precisely the actual preservation state of these radar bases, the memories of the witnesses have enriched this information by identifying non-evident or completely disappeared structures, adding anecdotal and historical information and confirming the recites of archival documents. It is therefore evident that this successful dual procedure should be intensified and extended to all the future studies concerning the Atlantic Wall and, in general, to all the contemporary military structures, as long as surviving primary witnesses will be available. A megalithic stone circle discovered on the site of the radar base of Kervingam-Kerdené is presented.
