The Geometry of the Infrared and X-Ray Obscurer in a Dusty Hyperluminous Quasar

Abstract: We study the geometry of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) obscurer in IRAS 09104+4109, an IR-luminous, radio-intermediate FR-I source at z = 0.442, using infrared data from Spitzer and Herschel, X-ray data from NuSTAR, Swift, Suzaku, and Chandra, and an optical spectrum from Palomar. The infrared data imply a total restframe 1-1000 μm luminosity of 5.5×10 46 erg s −1 and require both an AGN torus and a starburst model. The AGN torus has an anisotropy-corrected IR luminosity of 4.9×10 46 erg s −1 and a vi… Show more

“…Notice that these values are reported in Columns 2 and 4 of Table 1. bS2 baseline model, where the viewing and half-opening angles are tied together, is enough to explain the observations at both wavelengths. The fact that the inclination and half-opening angles from mid-IR and X-ray are directly linked to the same value is consistent with previous results (Farrah et al 2016). Furthermore, the σ parameter could be related to the opening angle of the ionization cone, which is a tracer of [OIII] emission (e.g.…”

“…This sample is one of the largest of obscured AGN with this high quality of IR and hard Xray data. Given the varied selection criteria of the S17 and B18 samples and our combination thereof, we investigated how well each of them, as well as our overlap sample of 69, 1 This type of analysis has been performed for individual objects (e.g., Farrah et al 2016 Koss et al (2017) recently showed that Sy1.9 AGNs could have column densities up to the Compton-thick regime. Only 12 sources in our sample fall into this category and they are not clustered in the parameters we examine.…”

“…The first publications from the NuSTAR survey programs are now further broadening the number of highly obscured sources in the Universe (e.g. Brightman et al 2015;Farrah et al 2016;Marchesi et al 2016;Masini et al 2016Masini et al , 2018Ursini et al 2017).…”
