The Geometry of Musical Rhythm

Abstract: Dedicated to János Pach on the occasion of his 50th birthday.Abstract. Musical rhythm is considered from the point of view of geometry. The interaction between the two fields yields new insights into rhythm and music theory, as well as new problems for research in mathematics and computer science. Recent results are reviewed, and new open problems are proposed.

“…Examples are the measures of TJ[VJOKE EQORNGZKV [ [32] [35], and measures of geometrical features extracted from geometrical representations of rhythmic patterns [35] [39]. Another measure for UKOKNCTKV[ between rhythmic sequences which was not considered here is also described in [17].…”

“…Only (e), element permutation, "involves structural derangement that is more drastic that the others" (p. 52). More recently, Godfried Toussaint (2013) has demonstrated how certain African, Afro-Caribbean and other timelines found in North American popular music can be constructed algorithmically from seed 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 11 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 13 rhythms using mathematical principles. One such rhythm is the three-against-two (3:2) or 222 [x.x.x.…”

“…Another concept used to explain the properties of pitch and rhythm that has received much attention in music theory is 'maximal evenness' (Clough & Douthett, 1991;London, 2004;Rahn, 1996;Taylor, 2012;Toussaint, 2013). In simple terms, a rhythm is maximally even if the strokes are distributed as evenly as possible within the cycle.…”

“…La meta del programa era enganchar a los maestros en actividades de modelización matemática con el propósito de que ellos, a su turno, pudiesen transmitir este aprendizaje a través de su enseñanza en el aula (Chahine & Montiel, 2015). Cabe mencionar que la mayoría de las bases teóricas e ideas para las conexiones entre las matemáticas y el ritmo musical que se implementaron en el taller han sido expuestas por académicos interesados en este tema (Demaine et al, 2009;Toussaint, 2013).…”
