“…pers., 2004).

“…As indicated by Camus (1990) and Sillitoe (1991), the Chilean gold provinces have suffered extensive erosion, particularly in the western Precordillera, possibly reducing the chance of discovering new gold deposits. Nevertheless, it is possible for us to discover new epithermal gold deposits if exploration is based on the characteristics outlined in Table 1.…”

“…Fig. 1 Spatial distribution of principal high-and low-sulfidation epithermal gold deposits in Chile, compiled after Sillitoe (1988 and Camus (1990). Values in parentheses indicate ages in Ma, which are taken from the compilation by Sillitoe (1981Sillitoe ( , 1991, Sillitoe et al (1991), Reyes (1991) and Sugaki and Shimada (1992).…”

“…A high palaeothermal gradient has also been suggested for coeval volcanic rocks situated along the western fault boundary of the Central Valley (Padilla & Vergara, 1985). In addition, the huge volume of ignimbrites, the occurrence of caldera structures and numerous epithermal precious metal deposits of late Cretaceous to Tertiary age in central and northern Chile (Camus, 1990;Thiele et al, 1991) suggest that fossil geothermal systems probably are common features in the Chilean Andes, interrupting the burial metamorphic pattern characterizing the rocks deposited during this time span. Wairakite has now been found at several localities in central and northern Chile (Nystrom & Levi, unpublished information).…”
