A B S T R A C TThe postcollisional tectonic development of northeast Mozambique and subsequent cooling from high-temperature metamorphism is delineated with an extensive new set of U-Pb titanite, 40 Ar/ 39 Ar hornblende, and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar mica analyses. The complex data suggest a polyphase metamorphic history from the late Neoproterozoic to the Ordovician within the East African-Antarctic Orogen (EAAO), with marked differences between the major constituent blocks. In all the data sets, samples from the basement south of the Lú rio Belt show generally younger ages than those from the north, resulting from a late metamorphic event and slow cooling between ca. 520 and 440 Ma. The ages north and south of the Lú rio Belt are consistently offset by ca. 30-70 Ma, a difference that is maintained and even appears to increase during cooling from very high temperatures to ca. 350ЊC. Based on the first-order assumption that all the ages are cooling ages, cooling rates in the south are estimated at ca. 7Њ-8ЊC/Ma, while those north of the Lú rio Belt are faster at ca. 16ЊC/Ma. The data are consistent with previous geochronological, petrographic, and field data and suggest a late high-temperature/low-pressure metamorphic event that affected only the basement rocks south of the Lú rio Belt and portions of the latter. This late metamorphism and subsequent delayed, slower cooling agree well with a model of elevated heat flow following lithosphere delamination in the southern part of the orogen, which also explains the observed widespread granitoid magmatism, migmatization, and renewed deformation in the southern basement.

SKS, SKKS, and PKS splitting parameters measured at 34 seismic stations that we deployed in the vicinity of the Cenozoic Malawi Rift Zone (MRZ) of the East African Rift System demonstrate systematic spatial variations with an average splitting time of 1.0 ± 0.3 s. The overall NE‐SW fast orientations are consistent with absolute plate motion (APM) models of the African Plate constructed under the assumption of no‐net rotation of the global lithosphere and are inconsistent with predicted APM directions from models employing a fixed hot spot reference frame. They also depart considerably from the trend of most of the major tectonic features. These observations, together with the results of anisotropy depth estimation using the spatial coherency of the splitting parameters, suggest a mostly asthenospheric origin of the observed azimuthal anisotropy. The single‐layered anisotropy observed at 30 and two‐layered anisotropy observed at 4 of the 34 stations can be explained by APM‐related simple shear within the rheologically transitional layer between the lithosphere and asthenosphere, as well as by the horizontal deflection of asthenospheric flow along the southern and western edges of a continental block with relatively thick lithosphere revealed by previous seismic tomography and receiver function investigations. This first regional‐scale shear wave splitting investigation of the MRZ suggests the absence of rifting‐related active mantle upwelling or small‐scale mantle convection and supports a passive‐rifting process for the MRZ.

BioNoMo: the Biodiversity Network of Mozambique

Mozambique biodiversity richness plays a pivotal role to achieve the sustainable development of the country. However, Mozambique’s flora and fauna diversity still remains broadly unknown and poorly documented. To properly address this issue, one of the strategic needs expressed by the Mozambican institutions was the development of a national biodiversity data repository to aggregate, manage and make data available online. Thus, a sustainable infrastructure for the standardisation, aggregation, organisation and sharing of primary biodiversity data was developed. Named the “Biodiversity Network of Mozambique” (BioNoMo), such a tool serves as a national repository of biodiversity data and aggregates occurrence records of plants and animals in the country obtained from floristic and faunistic observations and from specimens of biological collections. In this paper, the authors present the structure and data of BioNoMO, including software details, the process of data gathering and aggregation, the taxonomic coverage and the WebGIS development. Currently, aggregating a total of 273,172 records, including 85,092 occurrence records of plants and 188,080 occurrence records of animals (41.2% terrestrial, 58,8% aquatic), BioNoMo represents the largest aggregator of primary biodiversity data in Mozambique and it is planned to grow further by aggregating new datasets.
