The geological record and phylogeny of spider wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae): A revision of fossil species and their phylogenetic placement

Abstract: Accurate fossil identification has become increasingly relevant with the widespread use of phylogenetic divergence time estimation methods, which rely on fossil data to determine clade hard-minimum ages. Here we revise, diagnose and illustrate known spider wasp (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) fossil species and place them within the latest Pompilidae phylogenetic hypothesis. Ceropalites infelix Cockerell, from the Florissant Fossil Beds (Priabonian), is no longer recognized as Pompilidae, but as Aulacidae. Agenioide… Show more

“…Until now, the only venoms to be studied have come from just four genera: Anoplius, Batozonellus, Cyphononyx, and Pepsis [92,107,108,123,138,141,143,144]. These do cover the two major subfamilies of Pompilidae-Pompilinae (Anoplius and Batozonellus) and Pepsinae (Cyphononyx and Pepsis)-but there are many smaller subfamilies and broad swathes of the phylogeny even within the main two that have not been studied at all (see Figure 1) [87,88,153].…”

“…The primary aim of the present paper is to describe a group of mid-Cretaceous aculeate wasps from the Burmese amber which does not fit any described family even though it displays some features in common with the living family Pompilidae that is in turn of questionable taxonomic position and has an unusually short fossil record (Rodriguez et al, 2016(Rodriguez et al, , 2017.…”
