The geography of socio‐technical transitions: Transition–periphery dynamics

Abstract: The literature on socio‐technical transitions analyses multi‐scale, nonlinear changes in societal systems, but has tended to ignore the geography of these changes. This paper addresses this gap by focusing on a geographical periphery, rather than on the urban core, and considers a transition–periphery framework to provide a way to conceptualise and examine the dynamics of resource peripheries within a socio‐technical transition. The concepts of socio‐technical transitions and resource peripheries have been con… Show more

“…On the other hand, the “just transitions” literature seeks to identify winners, losers and the mechanisms that creates them in sustainability transitions (Newell and Mulvaney 2013 ; Swilling et al 2016 ). Bridging these perspectives requires to investigate unequal decision-making processes in transitions, spill-overs that transcend national borders (Newell and Mulvaney 2013 ) and broader global political economy aspects, such as core-periphery dynamics (Munro 2019 ; Newell 2020 ). The relations between transnational linkages, protective space and uneven within-niche empowerment processes play therefore a key role on the transformative power of sustainability transitions as well as their outcomes in terms of social justice.…”

“…The effects of climate change have sparked a wave of interdisciplinary research into sustainable transitions in the transport sector. However, there has been a limited exploration of the role of the physical spatial dimensions of these transitions (Levin-Keitel et al, 2018;Munro, 2019;Nielsen & Farrelly, 2019). Although the literature about transitions has made a significant contribution to understanding the complex and multi-dimensional shifts considered necessary for sustainable systems, it often neglects where transitions occur and the physical spatial configurations of the networks within which they evolve (Coenen et al, 2012).…”
