The Geographical Pattern of Thyroid Cancer Mortality Between 1980 and 2009 in Italy

Abstract: Background: Mortality for thyroid cancer (TC) is low and has been decreasing worldwide; yet few population studies based on mortality have been conducted. “…Sin embargo, al realizar un análisis comparativo más detallado con ese estudio y con otros internacionales surgen tres puntos de interés que necesitan enfatizarse: en primer lugar, la tasa media anual de mortalidad por cáncer de tiroides ajustada por edad presentada en este artículo (2006-2010) fue idéntica a la del quinquenio inmediatamente anterior (2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006) calculada por otros autores (9), siendo en ambos casos 0,3 muertes por 100 000 hombres y 0,7 muertes por 100 000 mujeres, lo que indica que la mortalidad media anual debida a esta causa ha permanecido estable en ambos sexos durante la última década, lo cual tiende a concordar con lo mostrado en la Figura 2 y con datos estadounidenses provenientes de dos estudios que mostraron estabilidad en la mortalidad por este cáncer desde 1973, siendo su tasa media anual de 0,5 por 100 000 en el periodo 2006-2010 (8,12). No obstante, en algunos países europeos occidentales y en Brasil se ha informado una clara tendencia a la disminución en la mortalidad por esta enfermedad (13)(14)(15); en segundo lugar, al comparar sexos existe una diferencia en la relación entre casos nuevos (incidencia) y muertes que aparenta ser desventajosa en el sexo masculino, esto es, mientras hay una razón incidencia/mortalidad de 24,4 en mujeres, esta es solamente de 2,6 en hombres, por lo que también sería razonable considerar que aunque las tasas cruda y ajustada de mortalidad por este cáncer son más altas en mujeres, el impacto relativo de la muerte es mayor en hombres que desarrollan esta enfermedad; y, en tercer lugar, al comparar con un estudio europeo se observa que la edad mediana de la muerte por cáncer de tiroides en hombres colombianos se encuentra dentro del rango mediano de muerte de sus similares italianos, mientras que, por el contrario, la muerte por este cáncer en mujeres ocurre en promedio entre 5 y 10 años antes en Colombia que en Italia, perdiéndose un aparente efecto protector para evitar morir tempranamente por cáncer de tiroides en ellas (16).…”
