While climate change has increased the interest in the influence of microclimate on many organisms, species inhabiting deadwood have rarely been studied. Here, we explore how characteristics of forest stands and deadwood affect microclimate inside deadwood, and analyse how this affects wood-living organisms, exemplified by the red-listed beetle Tragosoma depsarium. Deadwood and forest variables explained much of the variation in temperature, but less of the variation in moisture within deadwood. Several variables known to influence habitat quality for deadwood-dependent species were found to correlate with microclimate. Standing deadwood and an open canopy generates warmer conditions in comparison to downed logs and a closed canopy, and shaded, downed and large-diameter wood have higher moisture and more stable daily temperatures than sun-exposed, standing, and small-diameter wood. T. depsarium occupancy and abundance increased with colder and more stable winter temperatures, and with higher spring temperatures. Consistently, the species occurred more frequently in deadwood items with characteristics associated with these conditions, i.e. downed large-diameter logs occurring in open conditions. Conclusively, microclimatic conditions were found to be important for a deadwood-dependent insect, and related to characteristics of both forest stands and deadwood items. Since microclimate is also affected by macroclimatic conditions, we expect species’ habitat requirements to vary locally and regionally, and to change due to climate warming. Although many saproxylic species preferring sun-exposed conditions would benefit from a warmer climate per se, changes in species interactions and land use may still result in negative net effects of climate warming.

Biodiversity conservation is an important goal of most ecosystem management efforts. Therefore, proper monitoring of biodiversity requires constant attention. Coleoptera should be monitored as an essential part of the overall biodiversity. Special monitoring is needed for families that are active as predators (e.g. Coccinellidae) or are saproxylic species (e.g. Elateridae and Cerambycidae). The aim of the research is to describe the fauna of seven families of Coleoptera (Elateridae, Drilidae, Lycidae, Lampyridae, Cantharidae, Coccinellidae and Cerambycidae) of the Republic of Mordovia (the centre of the European part of Russia). The results are based on faunistic research, the main part of which was carried out in April-October 2007-2023 and on material from museum collections. The collecting was made using several different methods (by hand, light trapping, on different lures, into pitfall traps etc.). GPS coordinates are given for each faunistic record. The dataset contains information on seven species new to the region: Malthodes flavoguttatus Kiesenwetter, 1852, Malthodes minimus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Cantharidae); Scymnus rubromaculatus (Goeze, 1777) (Coccinellidae); Anoplodera rufipes ventralis Heyden, 1886, Tragosoma depsarium (Linnaeus, 1767), Xylotrechus arvicola (Olivier, 1795) and Xylotrechus ibex (Gebler, 1825) (Cerambycidae).

Malgré son isolement, l’île d’Anticosti a fait l’objet d’importants inventaires entomologiques depuis 150 ans. D’abord, le naturaliste William Couper a inventorié l’île en 1872. En 1904, le médecin et naturaliste Joseph Schmitt rapportait 161 espèces d’insectes dans Monographie de l’île d’Anticosti (golfe Saint-Laurent). Dans les années 1970, les travaux de Luc Jobin sur l’épidémie d’arpenteuse de la pruche facilitaient l’accès à l’île et des naturalistes ou des étudiants inventoriaient les coléoptères, les odonates et les orthoptères. Après le Sommet de la Terre en 1992, l’entomofaune de l’île d’Anticosti a été inventoriée par le Service canadien des forêts, en utilisant différents pièges, et d’autres inventaires d’odonates ont été réalisés par des naturalistes. Enfin, dans un mémoire de maîtrise, Pierre-Marc Brousseau inventoriait plusieurs centaines d’espèces de multiples ordres peu étudiés. À ce jour, 1541 espèces sont répertoriées. Les données de piégeage fournissent des estimations standardisées et des jalons temporels fiables pour mesurer la réponse des insectes aux changements environnementaux. Le déclin des insectes, rapporté ailleurs sur la planète, semble être observé aussi sur l’île d’Anticosti. L’endroit offre un contexte idéal pour un réseau de surveillance de la biodiversité et l’étude du rôle du changement climatique dans le déclin des insectes.
