“…Different areas of the Southern Ocean show great variability in plankton diversity (Almandoz et al, 2008;Hasle, 2002;Trainer et al, 2012). Several Pseudo-nitzschia species have been reported to contribute to local diatom communities (Almandoz et al, 2008;Hegseth and Von Quillfeldt, 2002), however, only P. turgidula showed low toxicity (Rhodes et al, 2013). Potential sources of dDA in the Southern Ocean are thus scarce, which matches low dDA concentrations determined in our study.…”

“…These concentrations are similar to those reported in the review by Trainer et al (2012;up to 30 fg Á cell À1 ) and in Lema et al (2017;up to 55 fg Á cell À1 ), though in the lower range of concentrations. For P. pungens, in contrast with studies reporting nontoxigenic strains (Villac et al 1993 and references therein), each of our strains produced DA, even if the measured cDA concentrations (0.2-50 fg Á cell À1 ) were also in the lower range compared with previous studies , Baugh et al 2006, Calu et al 2009, Rhodes et al 2013, Lema et al 2017. Pseudo-nitzschia pungens and P. fraudulenta also consistently produced dissolved domoic acid.…”

“…The strain IMP-BG 440 tested was able to produce the toxin in culture with a concentration between 0.004 and 0.010 pg cell −1 , which is comparable to those reported by Pistocchi, et al [49] (0.003 pg cell −1 ) in a strain obtained from the Adriatic Sea that was cultured under similar conditions (16-18 • C; 60-100 µmol photons m −2 s −1 ). These concentrations were lower than the values reported in Australian strains by Ajani, et al [63] (1-11 pg cell −1 ), Rhodes, et al [64] (1.5 pg cell −1 ) and in Italian strains registered by Amato, et al [65] (0.28 pg cell −1 ), Orsini, et al [47] (0.69 pg cell −1 ) and Sarno [48] (0.65 pg cell −1 ). The Humboldt Current system (HCS) is considered one of the most productive fishery regions in the world oceans [33,34,66,67].…”
