The Genoprotective Role of Naringin

Abstract: Since ancient times, fruits and edible plants have played a special role in the human diet for enhancing health and maintaining youthfulness. The aim of our work was to determine the interactions between naringin, a natural ingredient of grapefruits, and DNA using an electrochemical biosensor. Electrochemical methods allow analyzing the damages occurring in the structure of nucleic acids and their interactions with xenobiotics. Our study showed that the changes in the location of electrochemical signals and th… Show more

“…The study of Raitanen et al demonstrated that tannins from pine and spruce bark protected meat snacks against fat oxidation without affecting smell and taste [29]. Many studies have demonstrated the antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds, recent findings also point to possible genoprotective and neuroprotective effects, as well as those reducing the risk of metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases and cancers [30]. All of the tested extracts also showed antioxidant and reducing properties demonstrated by DPPH, FRAP and FCR methods.…”

“…Although the bitterness of naringin is similar to that of caffeine, the sensory panel considered sweet flavour as the most intense note after the addition of naringin to a 5% sucralose solution [ 32 ]. Due to its specific, partially planar structure, naringin is a very strong ligand interacting with various macromolecules, including both protein receptors and double-stranded DNA as well as oligonucleotides [ 33 , 34 ]. Moreover, the affinity of phenolic compounds differs significantly between the TAS2R receptors, e.g.…”

“…Historical reports and centuries-old cultural traditions show that some plants can be an alternative to standard pharmacotherapy or, at least, help with treatment or have a preventative effect. Modern science is very eager to verify these properties by analyzing the so-called medicinal plants for the presence of valuable bioactive compounds, including antioxidants, and the resulting interesting potential health properties [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. In order for them to be introduced into the diet, their purity in terms of toxic compounds must also be taken into account [15,16].…”
