Abstract: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a clinically defined syndrome of acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure secondary to non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema. It arises from a diverse set of triggers and encompasses marked biological heterogeneity, complicating efforts to develop effective therapies.
