The Geneva Smoking Pictures: Development and Preliminary Validation

Abstract: Cue reactivity is essential to the maintenance of addictive disorders. A useful way to study cue reactivity is by means of normative pictures, but few validated tobacco-related pictures are available. This study describes a database of smoking-related pictures: The Geneva Smoking Pictures (GSP). Sixty smoking-related pictures were presented to 91 participants who assessed them according to the classic emotional pictures validation provided by the International Affective Picture System (NIMH Center for the Stud… Show more

“…During the SP task (Supplementary Figure S2), subjects were presented with tobaccorelated images selected from the Geneva Smoking Pictures database (Khazaal et al, 2012). The selected images consist of two separate types of smoking cues: Product pictures that depict various product-related cigarette cues such as cigarette packs, cartons, or discarded cigarette butts, and Smoking pictures that depict people in the act of smoking a cigarette.…”

“…The selected images consist of two separate types of smoking cues: Product pictures that depict various product-related cigarette cues such as cigarette packs, cartons, or discarded cigarette butts, and Smoking pictures that depict people in the act of smoking a cigarette. The selected images were all previously normed for valence, arousal, and dominance (Khazaal et al, 2012). During the presentation of the tobacco-related images, the subject rated on a 7-point scale 'How pleasant would it be to smoke this cigarette right now?'…”

“…Indeed, recent studies have benefited from a finer differentiation of IAPS stimuli (Calvo & Avero, ; Weinberg & Hajcak, ). Similarly, attempts have been made to develop new instruments for emotion research by selecting specific groups of images defined by their semantic content (Billieux et al, ; Khazaal, Zullino, & Billieux, ). The influence of semantic content should also be considered for various personality groups (Kreitler & Kreitler, ; Murphy, Ewbank, & Calder, ) and patient populations, given that the meaning attributed to stimuli is influenced by prior experience (Goldstone & Hendrikson, ), age, and gender (Barke et al, ; Bianchin & Angrilli, ; Grühn & Scheibe, ).…”

“…However, some of the aforementioned treatment techniques that contain DTI components (such as mindfulness meditation, or EMDR) showed promising results in treating substance use disorders [56,57]. Especially in the domain of nicotine craving, where it was shown that attentional resources are highly biased towards smoking-related stimuli [58,59], several studies suggest that interventions aiming to modify the attribution of attentional resources might be beneficial. Thus, it was shown that a concomitant attentional interference which was driven by auditory instructions showed to reduce significantly nicotine craving [60].…”
