The genetic pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapeutic insight of rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. RA is a heterogeneous disorder caused by an abnormal autoimmune response triggered by the complex interactions of genetic and environmental factors that contribute to RA etiology. However, its underlying pathogenic mechanisms are yet to be fully understood. In this review, I provide an overview of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapeutic insight in the clinical management of RA in light of the recent u… Show more

“…The serological features of RA patients include elevated production of rheumatoid factor (RF), an increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). Some patients also test positive for anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP Ab) [2,3]. This complex and expanding disease is believed to be caused by genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and immunopathogenesis [4].…”

“…Overall, the prevalence rate of RA is about 1.1% of the adult population in Europe and North America [3], with lower occurrence in Mediterranean countries, e.g., 0.5% in Spain [4]. The exact cause of AR is unknown, although genetic, epigenetic, and environmental conditions may contribute to its development [1,5], and help to explain the high variability in geographic presentation.…”

“…The pathogenesis of RA is complex and unclear, and so is its aetiology. According to Western medicine, several different factors are involved in its pathogenesis, including genetic, infection and disorders of the immune system (Karami et al 2019;Zamanpoor 2019). In traditional Chinese medicine, RA is called 'Bi Zheng', a syndrome characterized by pain; numbness of the limbs, joints and muscle; weakness of flexion and extension; and, movement disorder.…”
