The genetic basis of scald resistance in western Canadian barley cultivars

Abstract: The genetic basis of resistance to scald (Rhynchosporium secalis) within barley breeding populations is poorly understood . The design of effective genetically based resistance strategies is predicated on knowledge of the identity of the resistance genes carried by potential parents . The resistance exhibited by a broad selection of western Canadian barley lines was investigated by evaluating their reactions to five R . secalis isolates . Results were compared to the resistance exhibited by previously characte… Show more

“…Several molecular markers for most of the known Rhynchosporium resistance genes have been described; for the Rrs1 locus on 3H: HVS3 (Genger et al 2003a), cMWG680 (Graner and Tekauz 1996), Bmac209 (Grønnerød et al 2002), Falc666 (Penner et al 1996); for Rrs4 on 3H: HVM60 (Patil et al 2003); for Rrs12 on 7HS: Bmag7 (Genger et al 2003b); for Rrs13 on 6HS: Cxp3 (Abbott et al . 1995), MWG916 (Genger et al 2003b); for Rrs14 on 1HS: Hor2 (Garvin et al 2000); for Rrs15 CI8288 on 2HS: (Schweizer et al 2004); for Rrs15 on 7HL:…”

“…Single dominant genes controlling scald resistance have been identified (Shipton et al 1974;Penner et al 1996). Pickering et al (1987) proposed that line 4176n possesses a single dominant gene for scald resistance; however, no data were provided.…”

“…'Hudson' and 'Atlas 46', the latter possessing a similar but broader spectrum of resistance genes than Atlas (Tekauz 1995), were included in the group of accessions. This was based on the assumption by Penner et al (1996) that the majority of resistant cultivars released from western Canadian breeding programs were similar to 'Hudson' or Atlas in terms of scald reactions. Penner et al (1996) considered that 'CDC Earl' had a 'Hudson'-type resistance.…”

“…This was based on the assumption by Penner et al (1996) that the majority of resistant cultivars released from western Canadian breeding programs were similar to 'Hudson' or Atlas in terms of scald reactions. Penner et al (1996) considered that 'CDC Earl' had a 'Hudson'-type resistance. While 'Hudson' was found to be highly resistant in the present study, nearly a quarter of the isolates tested were virulent on 'CDC Earl', indicating that resistance in 'CDC Earl' was not the same as that in 'Hudson'.…”
