The Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale-2 in a French sample: Psychometric evaluation of the theoretical model

Abstract: This research highlights the insufficient psychometric properties of the GPIUS-2 in a French sample, similar to previous results. However, this French version appears to be a useful multidimensional tool for assessing problematic Internet use among students, and reveals promise for future research and clinical applications of the measure, given its solid theoretical basis and despite the results of this psychometric study.

“…The IAT [ 10 ] is a 20-item self-administered questionnaire that evaluates the degree of PIU from a behavioural perspective. This questionnaire has also been used to evaluate other PIU scales [ 19 , 20 , 22 ]. We administered the Japanese version of the IAT developed by the Division of Treatment of Internet Addiction and Research at The National Hospital Kurihama Alcoholism Center, and validated by Michie Hesselbrock (see https://kurihama.hosp.go.jp/hospital/screening/iat.html ).…”

“…The GPIUS2 model hypothesized that POSI and mood regulation increase deficient self-regulation, resulting in negative outcomes ( Fig 1 ). Adequate construct, discriminant, and convergent validity, as well as good internal consistency, have been reported for the original GPIUS2 and several translations thereof [ 12 , 18 22 ]. The results of previous studies empirically support the theoretical model of the GPIUS2, which allows for the evaluation of multiple aspects of generalized PIU.…”

“…The generally strong psychometric properties of the IAT can be compared to alternative measures of generalized PUI, such as the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale—2 (GPIUS2) ( Caplan, 2002 , 2010 ) and the Compulsive Internet Use Scale (CIUS) ( Meerkerk et al, 2009 ). The GPIUS2 suffers from complex factor structure and limited construct coverage more specific to social interaction rather than a broader preference for online content and services ( Caplan, 2010 ; Laconi et al, 2018 ). Compared to the IAT, the CIUS has limited evidence for test–retest reliability and criterion validity and a recent meta-analysis reported low pooled Cronbach’s alpha coefficients suggesting poor internal consistency reliability ( Laconi et al, 2018 ; Lopez-Fernandez et al, 2019 ).…”
