The GALEX Ultraviolet Virgo Cluster Survey (GUViCS)

Abstract: The GALEX Ultraviolet Virgo Cluster Survey (GUViCS) is a complete blind survey of the Virgo cluster covering ∼40 sq. deg in the far UV (FUV, λ eff = 1539 Å, Δλ = 442 Å) and ∼120 sq. deg in the near UV (NUV, λ eff = 2316 Å, Δλ = 1060 Å). The goal of the survey is to study the ultraviolet (UV) properties of galaxies in a rich cluster environment, spanning a wide luminosity range from giants to dwarfs, and regardless of prior knowledge of their star formation activity. The UV data will be combined with those in o… Show more

“…Cluster A represents low-mass cluster population. Hence, we use the ICM of the Virgo cluster as reference as it is a well studied in the context of ram-pressure stripping (e.g Vollmer et al 2001;Chung et al 2009;Boselli et al 2011;Ferrarese et al 2012;Yoon et al 2017), and widely referenced in galaxy evolution studies. Cluster B instead represents high mass clusters.…”

“…where M FUV is the (linear) average M FUV of the sample, EW(Lyα) is measured in the coadded spectra, and the constant of proportionality comes from a combination of that given in Lemaux et al (2009), 4πd 2 L , where d L is 10 pc in cm, c is cm s −1 , and the λ e f f of the FUV filter (1539 × 10 −8 cm, Boselli et al 2011). We then define the escape fraction of Lyα as:…”

“…The selection criteria are fully described in Boselli et al (2010a). The multiwavelength data used in this work have been taken from Boselli et al (2011), Boselli et al (2013), Boselli et al (2015), Ciesla et al (2012), Cortese et al (2012a), Cortese et al (2014. Morphological types and distances are taken from Cortese et al (2012a).…”
