The Future of Surveillance—A Survey of Proven Business Practices for Use in Oil and Gas

Abstract: Summary Surveillance in one form or another has been used in oil and gas production almost since the industry began. The initial goal was relatively simple and straightforward: monitoring output against production targets for individual wells and troubleshooting those same wells when problems occurred. The actual scope of what could be accomplished was limited by available resources and lack of tools and technology, so only a very few high-value wells could be monitored closely. W… Show more

“…In most companies, integrated operations take place in onshore collaboration rooms where multidisciplinary teams make use of real-time data sharing and communication technology to control offshore oil production operations. Integration derives from an understanding of complexity in oil production surveillance, thereby shifting from a previously dominant assumption that production processes could be understood and modelled distinctively from other processes [41]. Instead of structuring production processes in a sequential manner, integrated operations facilitate interactions by introducing collaborative work processes [42].…”

“…The implementation of integrated operations represents a major change in the business model of oil and gas companies enabled by the use of real data-sharing through ICT developments and increasing collaboration across disciplines, companies and geographical areas ( Skarholt et al, 2009 ). Integrated operations derive from a recognition of complexity in oil and gas production moving from a once consolidated assumption that processes could be divided, modelled and fully understood isolated from other processes ( Lochman, 2012 ). Hepsø (2006) claims that integrated operations are forms of common information spaces that enable multidisciplinary collaboration and knowledge creation.…”

“…The goal of troubleshooting a high value well has evolved to managing a producing asset to its potential (Lochmann, 2012). Engineers require data to analyze the behavior of the wells and make decisions in order to ensure production objectives.…”
