Journalists have traditionally focused on a small range of elite sources. Far less attention went to ordinary or common people, resulting in little visibility for that community in news output. However, bottom-up Web 2.0 technologies have given common people new communication tools, allowing them to disperse information autonomously. This has made traditional news media aware of a public desire for bottom-up participation in the news production process. Accordingly, some news media have begun to offer their own participation features. Bearing this context in mind, we address the question whether Web 2.0 has helped increase the visibility and importance of the common people in daily news output. Via a content analysis of five Flemish newspapers, the current representation of ordinary citizens is compared to a decade ago, before the appearance Web 2.0. The analysis shows that citizens appear more prominently in the news nowadays.

Este artigo explora a fronteira entre jornalismo e ativismo através da análise de dois documentários interativos focados na representação da violência de género: Mujeres en Venta (2014), que denuncia o tráfico de mulheres para fins de exploração sexual, e Artigo 170 (2019), focado em testemunhos de mulheres vítimas de assédio sexual em diversos contextos. A partir da análise de conteúdo dos documentários, à luz das funções da linguagem formuladas por Jakobson, argumentamos que o documentário interativo, baseado na herança das práticas documentais mais ativistas, funciona como um dispositivo estruturador da denúncia de questões de género e proporciona um encontro afetivo multifacetado com uma variedade e riqueza de testemunhos afetuosamente poderosos. Esta forma de representação de causas sociais, de acordo com esta investigação, atenua as fronteiras entre jornalismo e ativismo social e coloca em causa a isenção jornalística mas potencia o envolvimento e mobilização afetivas do público.

Sourcing practices in online journalism: An ethnographic study of the formation of trust in and the use of journalistic sources Arguably one of the most important factors of journalistic quality is careful source selection. Studies on online journalism have revealed working conditions which may lead to poor sourcing practices. This article seeks to answer the following questions: What sources do online journalists use, and how do they rationalize their sourcing practices? A total of 17 Finnish online journalists in 7 newsrooms were observed and interviewed over their practices of source searching, evaluation, and use. The study revealed five distinctive rationales of source use, which I call trust discourses: the ideological, the pragmatic, the cynically pragmatic, the consensual, and the contextual trust. Different trust discourses are associated with different source types, influences, and forms and degrees of source critique. The results reveal-among other things-the online journalists' largely unquestioned trust of official sources and the cynical re-purposing of content from other media. The study provides accurate first hand observations on the sourcing practices and the results thereof of online journalists, and provides a viable framework for the further study of sourcing practices in online journalism.
