Abstract: Positive psychology has accumulated a large and ever-growing body of scientific knowledge about human strengths and virtues. However, research on positive psychology interventions (PPIs) to develop such is still in its infancy. In this brief position paper, we summarize the status of PPIs in one of the positive psychology’s most important virtues: temperance. Temperance refers to the capacity to manage habits and protect against excess and is composed of forgiveness, humility, and (we include) patience. Specif… Show more

“…How will these processes play out to be handled in a balanced manner? Some clues may be found in the processes of self-regulation and temperance, as suggested by Haybron (2011), Van Tongeren et al (2018 and reviewed by Worthington and van Zyl (2021), and the virtues perspective by Cokelet and Fowers (2019), Fowers et al (2020).…”

“…Given the rapid rise and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in psychology, we expect to see a rise in AI-driven positive psychological interventions within organizations ranging from AI-Coaching to AI-driven chat bots aimed at enhancing wellbeing ( Greer et al, 2019 ; Worthington and van Zyl, 2021 ). Fully automated conversation agents (or “chat bots”) could automate the diagnosis of current challenges and generate appropriate self-help interventions tailored to the needs of the individuals ( Greer et al, 2019 ).…”

“…This paradigm of studying “what's right” rather than “what's wrong” has also led to the establishment of several focus areas ranging from positive risk management, positive health, and positive coaching (Van Zyl et al, 2020b ; Richter et al, 2021 ) to positive organizational psychology (Donaldson and Ko, 2010 ), positive artificial intelligence (da Silva, 2020 ) and positive computing (Jeong et al, 2020 ). Positive psychology has broadened our understanding of the elements underpinning wellbeing and the factors that undermine them with the collective efforts of academics, journals, professional societies, practitioners, and the public (Ng et al, 2021 ; Worthington and Van Zyl, 2021 ). With these collective efforts, positive psychology has given birth to several revolutionary theories, methodologies, frameworks, and approaches to measure, explain and develop the conditions required for individuals to thrive, communities to flourish, and societies to prosper (Lomas et al, 2021 ).…”

These developments have produced significant insights into the human condition and provided innovative solutions to complex individual-, organizational- and societal problems (Worthington and Van Zyl, 2021 ).…”
