The future of European communication and transportation research: a research agenda

Abstract: Our mobility system is changing rapidly. We are at the crossroad of major changes in the way we travel and deliver goods. Research agendas are adapting to this changed environment with new challenges and opportunities. This paper presents a research agenda for the future of transportation research structured along eight cluster topics of the Network on European Communication and Transport Activities Research (NECTAR).  The research agenda firstly highlights the growing complexity and need for multi- and interd… Show more

“…Digitalization is defined by Gray and Rumpe (2015) as the process in which a wide range of information and communication technologies (ICTs), also referred to as digital technologies, are integrated into all aspects of daily life. During the past decade, digitalisation has accelerated, having a transformative impact on mobility and transport systems (Macharis and Geurs 2019). Citizens increasingly need digital technologies for conducting tasks related to their mobility (Snellen and de Hollander 2017) such as checking schedules, acknowledging incidents, purchasing tickets or booking transport services (Durand et al 2021).…”

“…Considering the time lag of peripheral and disadvantaged regions, previously stated postulate should not be neglected and omitted from the focus of future scientific and professional literature. Moreover, transport and communications research in general, over the next 25 years (Geurs & Macharis, 2019), emphasizes the need to explore effects that go beyond the time of travel and efficiency.…”
